Mediacom bundles its three Xtream cable internet plans with its Local TV and Essential TV services. If you also need phone service, Mediacom has a few bundles that combine all three services.
Mediacom is your best option if you want speeds faster than DSL and don’t have fiber in your area. Plus, Mediacom offers one of the cheapest gigabit plans available—until the promotional pricing ends. You can get gigabit speeds in almost every location Mediacom provides cable internet, and if you’re lucky, symmetrical speeds where Mediacom uses its new 10G platform.
Pros
Cons
Mediacom seems like a steal for the first 12 months when we compare its Gigabit plan to similar ones from Xfinity, AT&T, and WOW! But after a year it becomes the most expensive of the four, costing up to $139.99 per month, depending on where you live. Plus, Mediacom has data caps you can’t remove with an additional fee like with Xfinity.
In our latest customer satisfaction survey, Mediacom ranks thirteenth out of 15 internet providers, placing it behind AT&T, WOW!, and Xfinity in overall satisfaction. It also ranks thirteenth in customer service and reliability, while its best ranking is eleventh for speed satisfaction. In contrast, Xfinity has the best speed score of the four in our survey, followed by AT&T.

Customers in Iowa should now begin to see the benefits of Mediacom’s new 10G Platform. The company announced the transition to this new infrastructure design in February 2023, citing West Des Moines residents as the first to see faster download speeds and symmetrical speeds without the need for a fiber-to-the-home connection.
In December 2023, Mediacom began offering 2Gbps download speeds and 1Gbps symmetrical cable internet in the West Des Moines area. The company said Bertram, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Fairfax, and three other markets in Iowa are next on the 10G Platform upgrade list.
Mediacom has been slowly raising the download speeds of its three non-gigabit plans since early 2022.
The 10G Platform is a project spearheaded by CableLabs to bring symmetrical 10Gbps speeds to cable internet subscribers. It uses a combination of technologies, including fiber optics and DOCSIS 3.1 and 4.0 standards, which already support 10Gbps download speeds. This platform allows Mediacom to deliver 10Gbps speeds without digging new trenches and installing new fiber-to-the-home connections.
The name 10G is short for 10Gbps and is unrelated to the 5G term used for mobile, which is short for “fifth generation.”
Mediacom doesn’t provide a specific window for 10Gbps speeds, but the 10G Platform that enables 10Gbps wired speeds is rolling out now.
